What is love? Part 2

A number of children were asked following question: “What is love?” When I read through some of their answers I had to share them with you!

“Love is when you kiss all the time. Then when you get tired of kissing, you still want to be together and you talk more. My Mommy and Daddy are like that. They look gross when they kiss.”

Emily – age 8

“Love is when your puppy licks your face even after you left him alone all day.”

Mary Ann – age 4

“Love is when Mommy sees Daddy on the toilet and she doesn’t think it’s gross.”

Mark – age 6

Oh to have the mind of a child and see things as they do!

Last week we looked at the story of Hosea and Gomer and focused on God’s call for Hosea to marry Gomer even though she was a prostitute. We said that love is a CHOICE.

As we keep going in the narrative we find a second “Love is…” in verses 3-8 of chapter 1 (book of Hosea).

Love is a COMMITMENT (Hosea 1:3-8)

Hosea didn’t take Gomer as his wife and then treat her like a second class citizen. Instead, he committed to loving her and uniting their lives together. They had 3 children and committed to raising their family in a God-honoring manner.

God chose to make a COMMITMENT to us when He chose to love us. He committed to providing a way for us to be united with Him, to be His bride. Despite our sin and deep desire to pursue self-gratification God committed to providing a way of escape for us.

Commitment isn’t something we should assume or take for granted. Make sure you take time to communicate your commitment to those you love today. Whether that requires you saying it verbally or demonstrating it sacrificially, make sure your commitment is known.

Questions to think about:

1) Am I 100% committed to my spouse?

2) When was the last time I communicated my commitment to them?

3) What has Christ done for me lately that demonstrates His commitment to loving me?

4) When was the last time I thanked God for His commitment to love me?
